The EMAG Group as a spindle manufacturer

The EMAG company has existed since 1867 and was founded as an iron foundry and machine factory in Bautzen, Saxony. The company was renamed in 1952 in Baden-Württemberg and moved to its current headquarters in Salach in 1969.

Since then, EMAG has been producing automatic lathes, CNC turning cells and manufacturing systems as well as VSC machines. Today EMAG stands for turning and gear cutting machines as well as grinding machines as well as machining centers and a variety of other machine tools and systems. The variety of technologies is enormous and EMAG is also well developed in the area of Industry 4.0.

In 2018, EMAG employed almost 3,200 people and had 34 market companies, branches or service and sales points. Sales last year amounted to 673 million euros, the export share was 75 percent.


The Spindeldoctor as your competent EMAG partner

We at Spindeldoctor specialize in the repair and maintenance of EMAG spindles and machines. Their special feature lies in their size alone, which we can easily handle using existing cranes with load capacities of up to 15 tons. Thanks to our spacious assembly and production halls, we are also happy to work on spindle units weighing more than two tons.

Our work includes both proper and professional repairs as well as carrying out rework. We manufacture spindle shafts ourselves in our factory and chrome-plating the bearing seats is also part of our range of services. We are also happy to manufacture individual parts up to a size of 1.50 meters and also keep all common bearing types, sealing systems, rotary encoders and winding housings in stock.


Which EMAG spindles and machines are repaired?

The Spindeldoctor’s range of services is broad. The main spindles of the VSC machines VSC 200, VSC 250, VSC 300, VSC 350, VSC 400, VSC 450 and VSC 500 work as rotary motor spindles with a flanged release cylinder and a vertically installed chuck or workpiece holder. We now have a great deal of routine in repairing such spindles and have mastered not only the replacement of the bearings, but also the coordination of the hydrostatic ring of the lip seal with the cylinder itself. We also recondition EMAG cylinders and chrome them. The subsequent grinding is carried out within minimal tolerances and with the highest precision in the range of a few hundredths of a millimeter.


Revision of EMAG spindles

Another area of application for the Spindeldoctor is the reworking of EMAG spindles. Grinding and chrome-plating to undersize or oversize and re-grinding to finished size are carried out directly in our factory. In this way we minimize waiting times and offer fast service for both hydrostatic rings and housings.


Holistic concept

Our approach to EMAG spindles and machines is holistic. Great attention is paid to analyzing weak points and eliminating them. For example, we were able to identify cylinder wear, hydrostatic oil leaking from the unit, and under-lubrication due to a lack of engine cooling as common damage patterns. A main trigger is the lack of control and maintenance of the engine’s water-glycol cooling system, which we can change without any problems.


What characterizes intact EMAG spindles?

The special feature of EMAG lies in the combination of turning, milling and grinding within one product. The solutions are interlinked and linked and cover an extremely broad spectrum. Such innovative solutions naturally also require corresponding service solutions, which are available in this form from Spindeldoctor.


Structure of an EMAG spindle

EMAG has always built its own spindle units and boxes and uses motors, windings as well as bearing and clamping units from well-known manufacturers in the machine tool sector. The bearing sizes reach a diameter of up to 230 millimeters and the tonnage is up to 2,900 kilograms. As a rule, at EMAG we deal with electric drive spindles that were assembled directly at EMAG.


Testing the EMAG spindles

At Spindeldoctor we have the ability to thoroughly test EMAG spindles and run them into our factory in a controlled manner over a period of hours. Before the spindle is reinstalled in your machine, we evaluate the results and are only satisfied when they fall within the strictest specifications.


EMAG Express repairs in just a few days

In our collaboration with Volkswagen, we have proven that EMAG spindles can also be repaired as part of an express service. We needed three to six days for this, but this requires prior clarification of the scope of the repair and the corresponding technical conditions of the spindle.


Removal and installation as an additional service

It goes without saying that we take care of the removal and installation of the EMAg spindle directly on site, as well as worldwide service.

You can also find a wealth of EMAG spindles in our exchange spindle pool. With our VL units we cover a range of machines and also complement our portfolio with units for the VSC Duo 250, 300, 350, 400 and 450.
